Some Frequently Asked Questions
How
often will you see my child?
This
is negotiable from child to child, and is very much up to you. Some children may only need fortnightly or monthly
appointments. This is often the case when follow-up work is being done at home.
I will provide work for you to do so that you do not need to see me on a more
regular basis. Some children may progress so quickly that they need a weekly
appointment just so we can keep up with their progress.
It is sometimes necessary to see a child more frequently; I have seen children on a daily basis when introducing P.E.C.S. for instance. On these occasions a special rate will apply as we will also have much shorter sessions. Again this is all negotiable and depends on your child’s needs, and your needs.
Why
choose a private therapist?
Private
therapists are no better qualified than N.H.S. therapists. We do have the luxury,
however, of having shorter waiting lists and usually can be a little
more flexible about how and when we offer therapy. You may find that a private
therapist will be able to offer more appointments than an N.H.S. therapist
would.
Where
and when will my child be seen?
I usually offer therapy in the home environment. Sometimes a school visit may be in order to address your child’s communication needs at school. Appointments can be arranged for during the day, early evenings and on Saturdays. I believe that therapy should be tailor-made for the needs of you and your family.
Appointments can often be made at short notice.
Which
areas do you cover?
I
work in Hyndburn, Blackburn and the Ribble valley, Burnley, Pendle and the
Rossendale Valley.
my N.H.S. therapy ?
No. The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists recommends collaborative practice. I am happy to discuss this at any time and strongly feel that you should seek out the therapy provision that is best for your child. You may want to seek private speech and language therapy while you wait for N.H.S treatment. You can choose to attend both N.H.S. treatment and private therapy at the same time. It is entirely up to you.
How
long will my speech & language therapy session be?
Initial Assessments may take up to one and a half
hours;
complex cases may require more than one assessment. Therapy sessions last
approximately one hour.
Can I get any help in paying for private speech and language therapy?
If you have private health insurance you may be able to claim for the costs of the treatment. You may wish to contact your insurers before beginning treatment.
